Kawasaki Heavy Industries Licenses Grid-stabilization Tech to Kyoto's IKS Corporation

Kobe-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries has signed its first commercial license for iVSG inverter control technology with Kyoto startup IKS Corporation, targeting 2027 market entry.

KOBE — Kawasaki Heavy Industries signed its first commercial license for iVSG® grid-control technology with IKS Corporation, a Kyoto-based inverter maker, with deployment planned for around 2027.

The iVSG (inertia Virtual Synchronous Generator) system allows inverters used in solar arrays and battery storage to mimic the frequency-stabilizing behavior of traditional rotating generators. As renewables and data-center battery installations scale, they displace synchronous power sources that naturally dampen grid fluctuations. Inverters lack mechanical inertia, creating stability risk at high penetration.

Kawasaki developed iVSG to virtually replicate that inertia through software control, enabling renewable-heavy grids to self-stabilize. The technology completed field trials domestically and abroad. IKS will integrate it into commercial inverters under the new license; the release does not disclose financial terms.

Japan’s push toward data-center growth hinges on solving the inertia deficit. Kawasaki’s licensing model could accelerate adoption across inverter manufacturers, making iVSG a foundational layer in the country’s grid modernization. First units reach market in roughly 18 months.
